Doctor in the House, Part 2 - Initial Patients

Ed Johnson

Now that Galen was fully operational, he could begin using the newly upgraded medical facility at Jonson Station. His first patient would be Seaplane Jonson. Galen began with the standard physical exam, then used the scanning feature of the MediSys medical bed to check Seaplane's internal organs.

“How am I doing, Doc?” asked Seaplane, a bit apprehensively. “You'll live ...” replied Galen calmly, “... you've got some fairly common old man problems, but nothing that might prevent you from retiring safely here at the station. But you do need to maintain a healthy diet, continue to get appropriate exercise, and just take the time to enjoy life.” Seaplane smiled, appreciating Galen's empathetic bedside manner – he seemed almost like a traditional human doctor.

Later that day, Galen also examined Lilabelle, finding that she too was experiencing some common aging issues, but nothing serious enough to prevent their retiring together here at the station, at least for the near future. He did discuss with her the likelihood that both she and Seaplane would eventually need additional help, and suggested that when that time comes, caregiver robots could be provided right here at Jonson Station.

Sarah followed these developments closely, and she was quite pleased at the smooth operation of both the android doctor and the upgraded medical facility. She began working with the rest of the staff to develop additional support services and spaces, anticipating that the demand for the new medical services would likely grow quickly as soon as others found out that they were available.
