Outpost Tale, Part 4 - Attack!

Ed Johnson

Seaplane's intelligence sources proved accurate – only three days later, two spacecraft attacked Jonson Outpost. The outpost sustained some damage, primarily to cargo bays where pressurization was compromised when torpedoes breached the hull, and several crates then floated away through the resulting hole, never to be seen again. However, the attack was ultimately repelled, thanks to the elaborate preparations including upgraded weaponry as well as the situation room.

Galileo and the android Xander detected the two approaching craft well before they reached firing range, thus allowing effective tactical response. While the smaller craft served as a decoy and tried to draw fire, the larger craft brought its lasers and torpedoes to bear on the outpost. However, after only one volley, the outpost's more powerful lasers and numerous combat drones overwhelmed both attacking craft, damaging both and effectively stopping the attack.

The larger attack craft, although damaged, managed to escape since its propulsion system remained intact. The smaller decoy craft did not fare so well – indeed, it was blown apart, leaving a cloud of debris in its wake. With the attack counteracted, Xander ventured out in a small shuttle to survey the remaining debris.

To Xander's surprise, there appeared to be an intact body floating among the debris. He managed to use the shuttle's remote arm to retrieve the body, and returned to the outpost shuttle hangar. Galileo quickly joined Xander in the hangar, and to their astonishment the body promptly begin to move its limbs. Upon closer examination, the body turned out to be an android, so was able to survive the vacuum of outer space. Indeed, the android sustained very minimal damage, appearing fairly intact and operational.

Galileo asked Xander to escort the prisoner to a holding cell in in one of the undamaged cargo bays, then returned to the situation room to wrap up the defensive operation. Meanwhile, Xander guarded the newly occupied holding cell, waiting for the interrogation team to arrive.
