Outpost Tales, Part 2 - The Situation Room

Ed Johnson

The JE staff worked quickly to design and install a new situation room at Jonson Outpost, which would allow the crew to better and more accurately monitor and assess the tactical situation should the outpost be attacked. With this improved capability in hand, they'd be much better equipped to respond with the outpost's defensive weapons to resist an attack.

They set up two holographic imaging stations, allowing the crew to view the tactical situation immediately surrounding the outpost itself, as well as the status of any approaching spacecraft. Multiple sensors permitted scanning incoming craft, including limited detection of what they might be carrying. These advanced capabilities required more robust computing capabilities, so the crew added new computer systems to the outpost, bringing it up to the high standard already implemented at Jonson Station.

Simultaneously, the staff upgraded the outpost defensive weaponry, and integrated weapon command and control functions into the situation room so that a smooth, coordinated response could deal with any attacks. They installed additional laser turrets, to allow engaging multiple targets approaching from any direction. After some discussion, they also obtained a few combat drones, which could be deployed if the laser weapons somehow did not adequately meet the challenge. They also debated whether to add manned fighters to the arsenal, but decided to postpone that decision in view of budget limitations and lack of fully demonstrated need for such resource-intensive additions.

Finally, realizing that ongoing crew training would be critical to success in fending off any future attack, the staff installed a special simulator that enabled the crew to practice how they would respond to various threat scenarios. Fortunately, it was possible to develop the outpost simulator quite quickly and relatively inexpensively, by re-purposing existing systems already available back at Jonson Station, including the old Explorer training simulator Galileo had obtained years ago, together with some spare components held in reserve for Olympia's astrometrics system.
