Seaplane & Lilabelle Install JE Holodeck

Ed Johnson

After overcoming a series of tricky technological challenges, Sea & Lila finally succeeded in installing the long-awaited JE Holodeck. The crew had been lobbying for such a facility for months, hoping to offset with creative play the physical constraints and boring routine typical of remote outposts like JE Station. The new Holodeck is expected to be heavily used by the crew and perhaps even some station visitors.

Sea & Lila set up the JE Holodeck in a surplus room (previously used for storage during the original station construction), adapting holographic projectors similar to those found in the Astrometrics Lab, along with the high capacity computers which already power several labs and other station functions. However, the JE Holodeck reflects a more sober view of what might actually be technically possible in the foreseeable future, thus it lacks several features of the amazing but alas somewhat unrealistic Star Trek Holodeck. For example, while JE's projectors can depict very detailed three dimensional objects, they remain just projections without solidity -- users can walk right through projected images, since unfortunately there is no "holomatter" as presumed in Star Trek. Thus objects which need to be solid must be replicated separately (using the fabrication machinery in the Robotics Lab), and stored elsewhere when not being used in the Holodeck.

Crew members can create their own "scenes" which can be rezzed when desired in the Holodeck. Only one scene can be rezzed at a time, so each member can sign up for a scheduled session within the Holodeck, either alone or with friends. Scenes with the widest appeal will be given priority when conflicts arise. Because most crew members want to emphasize music in their scenes, the engineers have installed sophisticated audio equipment, which can augment the sounds produced by musical instruments, even adjusting them to reflect the acoustics of whatever room might be depicted in a given scene.
