Olympia in the Gymnasium

Ed Johnson

Living in space involves serious health challenges, so JE offers a well-equipped fitness complex to help space station crew maintain physical fitness. The artificial gravity provided by the station's rotation greatly assists this goal, but the limited physical extent of the station makes many traditional practices, such as jogging, somewhat impractical in space habitats. Consequently, these highly concentrated facilities are heavily used and quite popular among JE staff as well as visitors whose spacecraft lack such amenities.

The gymnasium offers a variety of fitness opportunities, including exercise machines for cardiovascular workouts, weights for strength building, and several socially-oriented aerobic group activities. In addition, the facilities include an artificial tropical environment with a hot tub warmed by artificial sunshine, and even special devices for enhancing sexual experiences. (For privacy reasons, the latter won't be depicted on this website, but they represent advanced approaches earlier pioneered by JSC's steampunk Lyra Lab.)

Moreover, the fitness complex provides personal trainers to assist crew members with their fitness activities, as well as medical support to assure ongoing health and safety.
