Galileo in the Explorer

Ed Johnson

Galileo Zeplin serves as JE's primary spacecraft captain, in addition to his other scientific and engineering duties (somewhat parallel to his ancestor's role as JSC primary steamboat captain). His vast experience in many different types of spacecraft, as well as his great skill in coping with almost any piloting or operational challenge (anticipated or not), contribute to his ongoing success in JE missions of all sorts.

Usually you will find Galileo on the bridge of the Explorer, JE's primary spaceship, which undertakes local as well as long distance voyages. Curiously, there are two different versions of the Explorer, both based loosely on the Defiant of Star Trek. The more realistic version conducts missions around the solar system, and even longer missions within that system take a long time and require many on-board resources. The more imaginative version includes warp drive capability (although it may well not be actually possible), which allows a greater variety of missions extending to a galactic scale. In either case, the longer Explorer missions usually try to minimize human crew size, to reduce the amount of consumables taken along -- often robots substitute for humans, although in most missions at least one human should be included to cope with very challenging situations which may lie beyond the wise decision making abilities of even the most advanced robot.

Galileo and his assistant pilots also operate a small fleet of shuttles which provide transportation between Jonson Station and the various asteroid mines that support it. The shuttles transport both humans and robots, as well as a great variety of cargo loads.
